For some odd reason, my computer/server is not cooperating, and I cannot send out emails, even though I can receive emails, and I can access websites. This has been going on for over 24 hours. Very bizarre and very frustrating. My husband will be looking into it. In the meantime, I didn't want any of you to wonder about my silence.

If any of you have any suggestions, they are much appreciated. I have an iMac and OSX and Earthlink.

How funny; I had no idea you were a fellow Mac user!

I am assuming that you are accessing your mail from a mail program and not the Internet itself. So my guess would be that, somehow, your outgoing mail settings got messed up. Might Earthlink have changed them on you? To change it, if you're using Apple's Mail program, you'd go to the Mail Menu and change your Preferences under Accounts. If Earthlink is now requiring a username and password to send mail and didn't used to before, you'd need to enter those into the blanks for it under Outgoing Mail.

If you were using an outgoing mail server that WASN'T Earthlink's, then there's a good chance they cut off outgoing mail access, since spammers are notorious for abusing outgoing mail servers. The remedy there would be to switch to Earthlink's server, probably.

I don't know about your e-mail, but almost all providers also have a Webmail option, so in a pinch, you might be able to just log into your e-mail from the Internet and send from there. I had to do that for a while back when I was using my university's e-mail but logging on from home with my parents' AOL (which doesn't give you an outgoing mail server). I HATED it though; I don't know why, but I hate webmail.

ANYWAY, I hope you get the problem fixed soon!

Joy, you might consider installing Thunderbird, an online email program which intercepts emails going to your established email account. I had trouble with aol for a while and used Thunderbird to check my aol email until I got aol running again. By using Thunderbird, at least you can still receive and send emails.

I'm also a Mac user.
I have heard about Thunderbird and it's an excellent program. If I had problems with my email, I would seriously consider it.

Thanks for letting us know, Joy. I was wondering where you were, but I thought you were just busy with your new job.

Yipee!! IT'S FIXED!!! My husband finally sat down and set his trouble-shooting skills to work, and figured out that although Earthlink bought out Mindspring eons ago, my email was still being sent out through Mindspring, though it was apparently receiving mail through Earthlink--go figure. So he thinks that the day before yesterday someone at Earthlink must have decided, "Oh! We don't need THIS any more!" and did away with Mindspring. And POOF! there goes Joy's email-sending server! Sigh!

So he went to the Earthlink website and changed my email-sending server to Earthlink, and PRESTO! Changeo! I can send email again! I am no longer muzzled! Watch out world! Here I come!

Thanks for all the suggestions and TLC!

Joy
